Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - While it's not something within the control of Erie County government, the County Executive and Legislature are watching closely as Buffalo officials navigate their way through a new parking policy in the city that has drawn harsh criticism.
The new parking policy which doubles rates, extends the period of time for metered parking and requires special event parking, has the attention of county leaders as the Buffalo Common Council is poised to adopt amendments to the policy and allow for additional public input.
Legislator Joe Lorigo stated, “It is disappointing that significant changes like this were made without public input the day after Christmas. People who work, shop, eat and enjoy other events in downtown Buffalo deserve to have a voice. I encourage the mayor and Common Council to consider additional public input before moving forward with any changes.” Legislator Ed Rath is voicing concerns too, saying,
“I am encouraged to see city representatives working towards a better solution, but returning street parking hours from 8am-5pm simply isn’t enough. We should be looking to support increased traffic downtown, not turn it away by raising parking prices. I am hoping the city will come to an agreement to keep downtown parking affordable.”
A public meeting on the parking plan is scheduled for January 15th in Buffalo Common Council chambers.
