
"I would think that if these animals were surrendered to the SPCA Serving Erie County under normal circumstances, I'd be shocked if these animals even spent the night," Gina Latucca said. "They would be adopted so quickly. These are animals that came from overrun shelters in the south. It's kind of a snapshot of animal welfare here in the north versus the south. It's a very different situation in states like South Carolina."
The SPCA was expecting 14 dogs and five puppies that had already been surrendered to the shelter in Georgetown.
The five puppies will receive their vaccinations then be sent to foster families, who will have first dibs at adopting the dog if they choose. Most of the adult dogs that were surrendered to the SPCA have already been vaccinated and may be available for adoption as early as Wednesday or Thursday.
"I saw some lab mixes and I saw some hound mixes, a lot of retrievers," Latucca said.
