Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo is within striking distance of setting a new snow record for January.

The current record is 68.3 inches set during the infamous Blizzard of 1977.  That storm, 42 years ago, made weather history in Buffalo as the snowiest January ever and has been the benchmark for every storm since.

"It's going to be close," said WBEN 7 First Alert Meteorologist Aaron Mentkowski.  As of Thursday morning the Buffalo Airport was 5.9 inches below the all-time record.  "If we get six inches of snow today, we could set a new record for the month," said Mentkowski.

Even if snow on Thursday does not fall at the Airport in Cheektowaga, Buffalo is guaranteed a 4th place finish for January snow with 62.4 inches.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown tells WBEN he prefers not to break the record. "I'm just fine where we are right now.If we don't get another bit of snow, that would be great for me," said the Mayor.

Does Mentkowski want to see the record broken?  "Yeah!, if we're this close, let's do it!" he said.

A daily record for #snow in #Buffalo was set on Tuesday and Wednesday. Right now this January is in 4th place for most January snow. The record is in sight! @wkbw @NewsRadio930 @EdDrantch @KatieMorseNews @BuffaloGrlProbs https://t.co/DaxGWILKwT pic.twitter.com/1H9fPULMzI
