BUFFALO (WBEN - Brendan Keany) - An additional four new drug and needle disposal sites have been installed at Kaleida Health facilities in Erie and Niagara Counties.
Gale Burstein serves as the Erie County commissioner of health, and she explained that the kiosks are a way to combat drug addiction.
"We identified safe, convenient and anonymous disposal of drugs as one of our strategies to address this public health crisis and built up a network of Erie County sites that now includes more than 30 locations nearly every town in Erie County," said Burstein. "
In the process of disposal, Erie County Sheriff's collect the medication from the boxes in Erie County, and then the drugs are securely stored and then taken for regular burns and incinerations at Covanta Energy, which provides the free service for the eight counties of Western New York.
