SOUTH BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN).....Long vacant, the former St. John the Evangelist Church in South Buffalo may soon be renovated into a a market rate apartment complex.
Grand Island-based Chris Shores LLC is working with Buffalo officials on the redevelopment plans.
Tentative plans, pending various city approvals, would see the circa-1931 era former church at 2317 Seneca Street renovated into 24 market rate apartments, with a mix of one-bedroom and two-bedroom units.
It would help a need and void for new, market rate apartment options in South Buffalo.
The church's main altar and sanctuary will remain intact and serve as a community room for the apartment's tenants.
A dominate architectural landmark along Seneca Street, the church is highly regarded for its Ohio sandstone exterior.
If approved by various city agencies, including the Buffalo Planning Board, the renovation work could begin this summer.
