NIAGARA COUNTY, N.Y. (WBEN) - Niagara County is reporting that 50 people have died from coronavirus.
Among the new deaths include an 86-year-old man and three women, ages 89, 90, and 95. All four of the people who died had an underlying health condition.
There are 796 total cases of coronavirus in Niagara County. 20 people remain hospitalized.
447 people have recovered from the disease.
Niagara County Chairwoman Rebecca Wydysh acknowledged a report from Channel 2 that said the Newfane Rehab and Health Care Center rejected support from the state after an outbreak at the nursing home resulted in the death of at least 16 people due to coronavirus.
"We don't have all the facts yet," Wydysh said. "It remains to be seen if we will receive back an official report from the state department of health. But we know that work is ongoing and certainly we will continue to raise that issue with the governor's office and other state officials as we continue to monitor the situation and hear what's coming back from that."
As of May 14, there were 204 total hospitalizations in the Western New York region that includes Niagara County. Western New York, as a whole, has reached five of the seven metrics in order to reopen. New hospitalizations are below the state-mandated threshold of two per 100,000 residents. However, the region still has difficulties with total hospitalizations and new deaths.
