AMHERST, N.Y. (WBEN) - Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg's appearance at the University at Buffalo on Monday has piqued the interest of politically-active people on the college campus.
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg headed to Buffalo
"I think it's a real opportunity for us members to really get to see and hear from a living legend," Hayden Gise, Political Director for UB Democrats and a junior at the college, told WBEN. "A lot of people see her as a real role model and someone to look up to. She's broken through numerous glass ceilings throughout her life and she is truly one of the great legal minds of our time. We really see it as an honor and a privilege to hear from her."
Specific topics that Justice Ginsburg will bring up haven't been made public, but Gise said he hopes to hear her discuss workers rights, especially because he's not too far away from joining the workforce. Gise said he will be in attendance for Ginsburg's appearance.
"We definitely want to hear her weigh in on the rights of unions and making sure that working people are protected," Gise said.
Gise was able to secure a ticket for Ginsburg's appearance, though Musilli wasn't able to.
Ginsburg, 86, was recently treated for a cancerous tumor on her pancreas on Friday, though the campus said that her appearance in Western New York on Monday was still on as scheduled.
The University at Buffalo's law department declined our requests for an interview on Ginsburg's appearance, citing a request by the communications team for the Supreme Court.
Ginsburg will be presented with a SUNY honorary degree at the University at Buffalo Center for the Arts at 11 a.m. She will hold remarks and a discussion at Kleinhans Music Hall at 6 p.m. Both events are sold out.
