(WBEN) - New poll numbers show that voters across New York state overwhelmingly support measures to keep the state on “Pause” and require masks in public settings.

The poll from Siena Research found that Governor Andrew Cuomo’s order that face masks or coverings must be worn in public has support from at least 86 percent of voters from every party, region, gender, and race. Similarly, 81 percent of voters support keeping New York on “Pause” through mid-May.

The numbers show trust in the Governor at an all-time high, even amongst Republicans.

“When it comes to whom New Yorkers trust more to make decisions about reopening the state and its economy – the President or the Governor – it’s not even close,” said Steve Greenberg of Siena Research. “Only 16 percent of voters – and only 36 percent of Republicans – trust Trump, compared to 78 percent of all voters – and 56 percent of Republicans – who trust Cuomo. Even self-identified conservatives trust Cuomo more, 57-34 percent.”

In Upstate New York, the poll shows that 30 percent of people know someone who has had Coronavirus, and 13 percent know someone who has died because of the virus. The numbers are much higher downstate.

Thirty-two percent of voters think it’s very or somewhat likely large public gatherings – like sporting events, concerts or graduations – will resume this summer, but 67 percent think it is not very or not at all likely. Similarly, if such events were to resume this summer, 69 percent say it is not very or not at all likely they would attend.

A majority now say they do not think America will be back to normal at any time soon.
