ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP/WBEN) - New York is preparing for potential flooding in Lake Ontario area communities.

The State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services is coordinating preparedness with local officials.

Over 200,000 sandbags are being sent to sites in Cayuga, Jefferson, Monroe, Niagara, Orleans, Oswego, St. Lawrence and Wayne counties.

The mayor of Sodus Point, David McDowell, says residents are "concerned, and rightly so." The Democrat and Chronicle says that low-lying waterfront community often is the first place in the Rochester region to feel the impact of high water.

Niagara and Orleans County emergency officials said earlier this month that they're looking to prepare Lake Ontario shoreline residents about rising water levels.

"It's almost a daily, ongoing event," said Orleans County Director of Emergency Services Dale Banker. "We check water levels seven days a week."

Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich says crews there started filling sandbags on Sunday night. He says the town has been preparing for weeks and is ready for predicted rain.
