BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - More grocery store changes in Western New York.
Tops Markets is relaxing the plastic bag ban after many complained that reusable bags are a way to spread coronavirus. Tops has made the decision to return to plastic bags, temporarily.
New York State has delayed enforcement of the bag ban until May 15th.
At Tops, if a customer brings in a reusable bag and does not bag their own groceries themselves, the cashier will bag their groceries in either a plastic or paper bag. There is no additional charge for the plastic bags. There is a fee for paper bags. The change is in effect until further notice to alleviate sanitation concerns.
Wegmans is not making that change. But a spokesperson for Wegmans tells WBEN that they are considering limiting the number of customers near it's check outs in Buffalo-area stores. There are no set limits right now.Wegmans is tracking customer congestion near check outs. They say they were monitoring customer traffic this past weekend, and had no problems with congested areas at their stores.
