Get those CCMs ready.
Within the next few weeks, both downtown Buffalo outdoor rinks should be ready to welcome their first skaters, weather permitting, of course.
The Canalside rink is due to open on Nov. 21 with its full slate of activities including bumper cars and curling along with skating. There are varying charges at Canalside, depending on the activity.
Rotary Rink is slated to open on Dec. 6 as part of Buffalo Place's annual Christmas tree debut and fireworks display. Skating at Rotary Rink is free. Rotary Rink is part of Fountain Plaza.
And, both help restaurants and bars in their respective Main Street neighborhoods, says Michael Schmand, Buffalo Place Inc. executive director.
"They create a safe, family environment," Schmand said. "But, they also help bring people to restaurants."
Rotary Rink, which made its debut in 1991, has a proven track record of seeing its skaters make their way to nearby restaurants, including many on Chippewa Street.
"Just turn left and you are on Chippewa," Schmand said.
Canalside has the same spin-off economic impact with its neighboring restaurants.
"It's all part of helping downtown," Schmand said.
