Buffalo, N.Y. (WGR 550/WBEN) – The Buffalo Sabres have traded defenseman Erik Johnson to the Philadelphia Flyers for a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft.
Johnson was one of the Sabres' free agent signees this past offseason, as general manager Kevyn Adams was looking for a veteran presence among his young defensive group.
The 35-year-old was one of the main reasons, along with Jordan Greenway, why the Sabres' penalty kill turned things around this season. However, he did struggle while playing at 5-on-5.
The last time Johnson spoke with the media, he expressed regret that he didn’t play better to help the Sabres win more games this season.
Johnson had a huge effect inside the locker room, though, as his name came up quite a bit with the way he mentored the youngsters. The 2022 Stanley Cup champion was often the first one on the ice to defend a teammate as well.
Johnson played 50 games with the Sabres, scoring three goals and registering no assists.
