A Long Island homeowner made a shocking discovery over the weekend when he returned home to find a large sinkhole had formed in his driveway.

David Moultrie says he is counting his blessings and notes that the section of the driveway that collapsed over the weekend is where his daughter typically parks her car.

However, the girl was not home when the collapse happened, and thankfully no one was hurt.

“It’s a blessing that her car didn’t fall into it. Part of the car could’ve fallen into this,” he said.

There is now a massive hole in the front of his Elmont home.

“About 8-feet wide and probably 8, 9-feet deep,” Moultrie said. “It's a very dangerous hole for the neighbor's kids and all.”

The homeowner says he has been in the home since 2013 and has had little to no issues with the property, making this incident even more shocking.

A neighbor has speculated that the hole was likely caused by a cesspool that was not properly filled in when the sewers were installed many decades ago. The neighbor tells WCBS 880 that the same thing happened at his father’s home and other residents in the area have experienced similar incidents.

WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall asked Moultrie if the collapse could have been prompted by the recent bout of heavy rainfall, but Moultrie said it remains unclear how the sinkhole formed.

“When I left that morning, it was fine – drove over it, pulled out. I don't have no clue,” he said.

The neighbor that spoke with Hall says the best way to fix the sinkhole is to fill it with dirt or sand and then re-do the concrete on top.

Because the sinkhole is on Moultrie’s property, the local government cannot fix it. Instead, it will be up to Moultrie’s insurance company to step in to help pay for the damage.
