Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Local leaders continue to voice their concerns about the long-stalled Heritage Point project even though the developer says construction will re-start later this month.

The issue centering on the oft-delayed, $45 million Canalside project came - once again - to the forefront during the Oct. 14 Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. directors meeting.

ECHDC President Mark Wendel said, based on conversations he had with representatives of Sinatra & Co., final financing and construction documents will be signed later this week.

"There are a lot of documents that have to be signed," Wendel said.

Once the documents are signed, construction can re-start - perhaps by the end of the month, Wendel said.

"We are that close," Wendel said.

But some, like Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, remain skeptical. The county executive said he has heard similar promises, yet the project has been untouched since 2023.

"Maybe it's time to explore other options," Poloncarz said.

Located adjacent to the Explore & More - The Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Children's Museum and kitty corner from the LECOM HarborCenter - the project will see 60 apartments developed along with street level commercial and retail space in two neighboring buildings.

The Erie Canal Harbor Development Corp. named Sinatra & Co. designated developer for the site in 2018.

Some preliminary foundation and concrete pillars have been erected but Sinatra & Co. halted work on the buildings until it lined up its financial package.

Sinatra & Co. representatives did not return calls seeking comment.

In past interviews, representatives from the Buffalo developer have said they hope to have the two Heritage Point buildings completed and tenant-ready by late 2026.
