Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - "We are one of the largest and second oldest free Shakespeare festivals in the country, next to New York City," boasted Lisa Ludwig, Executive Director of Shakespeare in Delaware Park, which opens Thursday evening.

It's the 49th season of Shakespeare with The Winter's Tale, on the main stage, behind the Rose Garden, off Lincoln Parkway.

"It's a story about love, jealousy, betrayal and redemption," said Ludwig.
Shows start nightly at 7 p.m. ET with the exception of Mondays.

"Shakespeare is meant to be seen and heard. Of course what do we do? We have children read it in high school. Our goal is to get everyone out on the hill to experience Shakespeare live, even if you're afraid of it. It's a whole different experience," she explained.

Weather can an x factor. But they never cancel a show before 6:30 p.m. ET.

"Even if it rains prior, if we can dry the stage, there's going to be a show. We ask people to follow our website and social media for a cancelation notice. We're used to dealing with the elements," she said. "And the audience is too. They bring a blanket. They can buy a sweatshirt. We're ready."

The summer's second Main Stage production is The Comedy of Errors from July 25 to Aug. 18.

A traveling show, A Midsummer Night's Tour, is playing at 25 different venues throughout Western New York. You can find the touring schedule HERE.

The performances are free, but just like in Shakespeare's time, a hat is passed during intermission to collect donations from the audience. "It's a free will donation. Any amount is appreciated. Whatever you can do to help support and keep us going," added Ludwig.
