Amherst, NY (WBEN) The town of Amherst announces a partnership with a division of NOCO to improve composting services. Supervisor Brian Kulpa says it's part of an ambitious organic recycling program.
"This agreement will allow to the Town to maximize the registered capacity of our composting location. By partnering with Buffalo River Compost, an experienced composting company, the Town will produce high quality and certified compost product that will be available to town residents free of charge," said Supervisor Kulpa. "With New York State's ambitious climate emission mandates, we anticipate stricter regulations as it pertains to the disposal of food waste and composting provides an environmentally friendly and cost-effective way to reuse it."
The three-year agreement, which starts on January 1, 2023, calls for Buffalo River Compost to assist in managing the composting operations at the New Road location in collaboration with Town of Amherst Highway and Refuse Control personnel. Any excess final compost product can be packaged and sold by Buffalo River Compost with a 50/50 split of the revenue going back to the Town of Amherst.
"Composting is an emerging business not only in New York State, but across the nation as governments mandate that food waste can no longer be sent to landfills because of significant impacts of greenhouse gas emissions," said Brian Murphy, General Manager, Buffalo River Compost. "This is a growing business segment for NOCO as we diversify our portfolio of sustainable and renewable energy services."
