Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - The fight continues in the Town of Amherst, as residents contested their property reassessments for Grievance Day on Wednesday.
The town is still processing and investigating hundreds of assessment reviews, but Wednesday was the last official day for residents to submit the required paperwork.
Peter Allen Weinmann, a tax assessment attorney in Buffalo, explained that his office hasn't been this busy in years and that it's been "all hands on deck" to make sure everything is filed correctly for their clients.
Even though every case is different, Weinmann believes most of the clients they work with are hopeful for a positive resolution.
"Most people, I think, are optimistic that justice will be served. It's always tough for a municipality when they do town-wide or city-wide revaluations, because there's so many properties to analyze and to revalue," Weinmann stated in an interview with WBEN. "When there's enough evidence presented to the town, usually the town is able to make some adjustments. Maybe not as fully as we would like, but frequently, there are adjustments made. Every case is different. Every case has some timeline. In the end, if we pursue justice, usually we get justice in the end."
Amherst resident Dennis Hoban filed his grievances on Wednesday, and remains uncertain as to whether or not he will see anything come out of this. He says, though, he will continue to fight the assessment.
"I have no idea what's going to happen. At this point, I'm going to fight it, but who knows what the outcome is going to be? I'm optimistic. I'm hoping to get it lowered. I think I'm paying enough taxes as it is, and I can see the services are not what they used to be, and I know for a fact they're not maintaining infrastructures," Hoban stated. "Our money is going for some very frivolous things. It's just a very bad situation for the taxpayers in Amherst."
