Cheektowaga, N.Y. (WBEN) - An Amherst man has been arrested and charged with Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Crash during last month's lake effect snowstorm in Cheektowaga.

The Cheektowaga Police Department announced the arrest of 40-year-old Matthew Althoff after an investigation which included help from the community in identifying him and the suspected vehicle.

Police say that on Monday, Jan. 15, Cheektowaga resident Antwain Hankle was struck and killed by a passing driver as he was clearing snow off a vehicle in front of his home on Losson Road. The driver, identified as Althoff, then fled the scene without reporting the incident.

Althoff was officially charged with Leaving the Scene of a Fatal Accident Without Reporting (Class "D" felony), and was remanded to the Erie County Holding Center.
