The Buffalo Bills announced on Thursday the signing of free agent quarterback, and former No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, Mitchell Trubisky to a one-year contract.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter was the first to report the signing, along with the help of Jeremy Fowler.

Trubisky joins the Bills after a disappointing end to his tenure with the Chicago Bears. The 26-year-old ended up playing 10 games last season, starting nine of those contests, while throwing for 2,055 yards, 16 touchdowns, eight interceptions and a completion rate of 67%. He lost his starting job to start the season to Nick Foles, but then later re-assumed the role after Foles was knocked out due to injury.

After being the second overall pick in 2017 out of North Carolina, Trubisky won over the starting job in Chicago after the first four games of his rookie season. He finished the year going 4-8 as the starter, while throwing for 2,193 yards, seven touchdowns and seven interceptions.

In his second season with the Bears under new head coach Matt Nagy, Trubisky flourished and took a promising step up as he went 11-3 in 14 games under center, while throwing for 3,223 yards, 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His production in 2018 also earned him his first and only Pro Bowl nod, to this point of his career.

However, Trubisky's game seemed to take a steep regression in Year 3, going 8-7 in 15 starts and throwing for 3,138 yards, 17 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Despite leading the Bears to a 29-21 overall record in his four seasons in Chicago, as well as two playoff appearances, Trubisky never lived up to the expectations of his draft selection, especially since others like Patrick Mahomes (10th overall - Kansas City Chiefs) and Deshaun Watson (12th overall - Houston Texans) were taken after him.

With Trubisky in the fold, he will serve as Josh Allen's new backup in Buffalo, replacing veteran Matt Barkley.

Also joining Allen and Trubisky in the quarterbacks room to start the 2021 season includes 2020 fifth round pick Jake Fromm, as well as Davis Webb, who's currently signed to a reserve/future contract.
