Cheektowaga, NY (WBEN) An attempted traffic stop Thursday has left a 29 year old Buffalo Police officer critically injured.
Police say officer Jonathan Negron, who has two years on the force, was trying to stop a vehicle, when that vehicle crashed into a pole on Harlem Road in Cheektowaga. The pole came down on the officer's car.
Buffalo Police Capt. Jeff Rinaldo says around 1pm, a call for a white vehicle with four suspects and a gun went out at Crossman and Genesee.
"A C District officer responding to the scene, spotted the vehicle, attempted to stop the vehicle and a pursuit followed," says Rinaldo. He says that pursuit went through the C District, ending at Mount Calvary Cemetery. "As the suspect's vehicle was exiting the cemetery, across the street, struck a light pole after hitting two parked cars," says Rinaldo. The pole went through the driver's side window, striking the officer.
Negron was taken to ECMC by fellow officers in a BPD car. The officer is in critical condition. "He has suffered severe head trauma and is currently in the trauma intensive care unit," says Rinaldo.
