Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - As the official start time for the Thunder on the Buffalo waterfront Air Show approached Saturday, organizers were huddling and determining what to do as the outer harbor was shrouded in dense fog.
The fog was so thick at noon only the first few floors of downtown buildings were visible and organizers went into a show postponement.
Shortly after 1:30, low flying aircraft began to arrive over the mass of thousands gathered along the outer harbor, Canalside, Erie Basin Marina and other popular venues where the show was visible.
The visibility and conditions did limit the scope of the show and only one jet from the Blue Angels was able to fly over the waterfront to wow the crowd.
"Well the weather was terrible for it, but the show itself I thought was very good," one show attendee told WBEN as they were packing their chairs to leave the outer harbor where cars packed the lot. "We did miss the Blue Angels," they said, adding, "I thought it was a great experience."
Though many expressed disappointment at the delay and limited and abbreviated show, they also understood Mother Nature is in charge of events like these and were thankful some of the show was able to happen.
Caitlyn was viewing the show from the bed of her pickup truck with a smile from ear to ear, telling WBEN, "I thought it was amazing, all the cool flips and tricks they were doing." "It was like being a kid again," she added.
While the Buffalo waterfront was shrouded in fog much of the day, to the east the weather was much more delightful. John from Rochester told WBEN, "It's 86 and sunny in Rochester, what happened to Buffalo?"
Due to the limited show and weather conditions, air show organizers are extending all Saturday attendees the ability to attend Sunday. All Saturday general admission and VIP admissions will be extended general admission. Saturday ticket holders are asked to arrive at noon to allow Sunday ticket holders to be in place and avoid unneeded congestion.
An email will go out to Saturday ticket holders with details Saturday night.
Traffic patterns and restrictions will again be in place Sunday and you can read more about those here.
