Buffalo ball drop a 'go', COVID style

Attendees asked to mask and be vaccinated

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - The Buffalo ball drop on New Year's Eve in Roosevelt Square is 'on', but there are some COVID requests organizers are asking attendees to adhere to.

While there won't be any crowd restrictions like the Times Square event in New York City, attendees are being asked to wear masks, be vaccinated and work to socially distance themselves from others.

"It is an honor system," says Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown. "We're asking people to do the right thing for themselves and their families."

Police will not be actively enforcing the requested restrictions as attendees gather for the annual event which was not held in person last year due to the COVID pandemic.

"We're still not out of this," emphasized Dr. Raul Vazquez with G-Health Enterprises in Buffalo who is working in conjunction with organizers to keep the event safe. "If you're sick or unvaccinated, you probably shouldn't come out to thee events."

Organizers ran a successful test of the ball drop from the Electric Tower Tuesday morning.

Free parking for the public will be available at both the Mohawk and Fernbach ramps in downtown Buffalo.
