Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Buffalo Police has identified the officer that was shot in Tuesday's officer-involved shooting at a residence on Sherman Street in the city's East Side neighborhood.

According to the department, Officer Marc Hurst was shot while responding Tuesday afternoon to a domestic call at 256 Sherman Street. Hurst is a nine-year veteran of the department currently serving in C District.

As officers were attempting to detain the suspect inside the kitchen of the residence, getting one handcuff on him, the man - identified at 33-year-old Minhaz Siddiqui - was able to pull out a concealed weapon and fire multiple rounds, striking Hurst a total of six times - one time in each calf, one time in the upper thigh, one time in the upper arm, and twice in his bulletproof vest, hitting his radio and taser.

Hurst was rushed to Erie County Medical Center shortly after the shooting, where he underwent surgery on Wednesday and has received a good prognosis.

He has begun his recovery while he remains hospitalized at ECMC at this time.

"He's been on the department for pushing up on 10 years now, he's won several PBA awards for heroism, he's won departmental awards from the Commissioner's Office. He is a model police officer," said John Davidson, president of the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association.

"He is the kind of officer you want backing you up, showing up on things. The City of Buffalo is fortunate to have officers like him. He keeps the city safe, he makes the city the kind of place that people want to visit and that people want to live. This is the kind of officer that other officers aspire to be like. Fantastic officer, and our prayers are with him, and hopefully the entire city of Buffalo can rally around this young man."

As for Siddiqui, officials say he remains hospitalized at ECMC in stable condition at this time.

Police have charged the Buffalo man with first-degree attempted murder, and further charges regarding the initial call are anticipated.
