Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - A 14-year-old boy is dead after Buffalo police say he led them on a high-speed chase on Elmwood Avenue before crashing into two vehicles.

The incident happened Sunday night at around 11:30 p.m. EST. Officers say they first saw the vehicle speeding on Elmwood Avenue near Hertel Avenue. The driver did not stop when police attempted to pull him over.

The chase ended when the driver crashed into a car traveling East on Amherst Street, then it spun around and struck a third vehicle heading North on Elmwood.

The 14-year-old driver was taken to Erie County Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Joe Gramaglia says the vehicle involved in the incident was stolen.

"At the time, the vehicle was not reported stolen. It has since been determined it was stolen," said Gramaglia during a press briefing on Tuesday. "We had some difficulty locating the owner of the vehicle, which I couldn't answer some questions that were coming in from the media yesterday, although I certainly speculated that this was going to be a situation of a stolen vehicle, we were not able to contact the owner. It wasn't until later in the day yesterday that contact was made with the owner. We did obtain a statement. The last time the owner observed their vehicle was about 7 p.m. on Sunday."

The accident remains under investigation, and the Attorney General’s Office will also be looking into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
