Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Two Buffalo Charter schools will not have their charters renewed next school year.
The Buffalo School Board Thursday night voted not to extend the charters for Enterprise Charter School on Oak Street and Westminster Community Charter School on Westminster Avenue.
"What is clear today, in our community, is that the bar has been raised," said School Board President Sharon Belton-Cottman. "If you are going to function in Buffalo as a charter school, you will maintain the requirement of being innovative, and high performing with high academic achievement."
The renewal of charters for both schools was in jeopardy due to poor proficiency rates in math and English Language Arts.
At Westminster, 22% of students in grades three through eight were proficient in ELA, while 19% were proficient in math. As a comparison, at Buffalo Public Schools, 25% of students in those grade levels were proficient in ELA, while 19% were proficient in math.
"We have to make sure or children are prepared for the future," said Cottman.
The plan is for Enterprise to close in June and Westminster will be brought back as a Buffalo Public School in the Fall.
"I believe the plan is the best so our children get a better education, scores rise, and the school can excel. It builds on all of the positives to make this [Westminster] a great school, said Central District Board member Paulette Woods.
