Tonawanda, NY (WBEN) - Another 'off again, on again' story with a popular local festival is developing and it appears there could be a Canal Fest in Tonawanda after all.
Organizers of the popular multi-day event are hinting at a return of the summer festival weeks after announcing its postponement.
Tonawanda City Mayor John White says organizers had a meeting this week and elected to move forward with a festival this year. "When you cancel something, you really take a look at it and see the people that connect with you and say, hey, look, we can maybe help or assist. I think that's what happened," says White. He says this event benefits non-profit organizations. "Some of those not for profits, that's their whole year, in generating an income for the things they do within the city. So I was behind it, I always was a supporter of it," says White.
White says his concern is it's coming late in the game. "It's still got to go through our council on Tuesday night because they didn't have council approval from the city, because they said it was canceled. So they actually never came in to the city and got an approval. But with a quick poll of the council we feel that they can come up with enough to do it," notes White.
Canal Fest organizers declined to comment Friday, only saying more information would be released soon.
