Here's just a small sample of places the Cheektowaga Police Department has to patrol:

* The Walden Galleria and surrounding shopping plazas along Union Road and Walden Avenue.

* Buffalo Niagara International Airport - in conjunction with the NFTA and TSA law enforcement agencies.

* The more than 12 hotels in and around the hotel.

*New residential-anchored developments along Transit Road.

*The Cheektowaga, Cleveland-Hill and Maryvale school districts.

* A base of manufacturers and other businesses along Walden Avenue.

* Countless homes, subdivisions and apartments.

"Above it all, our focus is still safety and security," says Capt. Jeffrey Schmidt.

Cheektowaga - and other law enforcement agencies locally and nationally - are also dealing with any ripple effects that may come from rising global unrest.

So far, it hasn't happened in Cheektowaga, but Schmidt said they are taking nothing for granted.

"We want to be aware of incidents and handle them before they unfold," Schmidt said.

Global issues added another layer to a "lockdown drill" Cheektowaga and the Walden Galleria security team had earlier this week. The drill had been previously scheduled.

"But, we want to be ready," Schmidt said.

With 123 officers Cheektowaga is one of the larger suburban police forces. It has 10 openings.

And, even with all its expertise and experience, Schmidt said they still rely on everyday citizens calling in when they see something suspicious.

"We do rely on our community members," Schmidt said.
