Buffalo Common Council asks Mayor to pause school speed camera program

School Speed Camera

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - Buffalo's Common Council voted Tuesday to officially ask the mayor to pause the school speed zone cameras in the city. If enacted, the pause would stop the ticketing of drivers, but not eliminate the flashing lights or beacons.

The cameras have been a constant point of controversy because of the amount of tickets issued, and timeliness of receiving those tickets. The Council previously voted to scale back the hours when the speed cameras operate.

"I want to be clear, those of us who agree with this resolution also agree with safety," said Buffalo Common Council President Darius Pridgen. "When you have people who are still receiving tickets, being told there are no problems, and then getting a ticket where it's suggested on there that people can lose their registration... there's still a problem."

Council members on Tuesday mentioned the numerous complaints of bills received in the mail after their due dates. The council can only ask the Mayor to turn it off, but it would be his decision to actually say yes.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown has repeatedly voiced his support of the program, saying it is about the safety of children in Buffalo.
