West Seneca, NY (WBEN) As construction continues on the Costco in Amherst, the wholesale shopping chain has settled on its second WNY location: the former Seneca Mall site.
West Seneca Supervisor Gary Dickson says the documents for the planning board were submitted today, plastered with Costco's name. "This is huge," says Dickson. "This is probably the biggest development in West Seneca in in quite a while, and you know we've been waiting for this for you know 3540 years, and you know we're very happy to to finally see some movement. We'll be even happier when the stores are open."
The town's planning board is set to look at the proposal August 13. Dickson says that will likely be the easy part. "They're very organized, but they'll have to answer some probing questions from the planning board, and then they have to start the the construction process, which I think is going to be very complicated," says DIckson. "I know they're going to need to to to do some compacting of the site that the Costco will be on. That's what the the purpose of that giant mountain of dirt that everyone's been commenting about. That will be moved onto the the pad where Costco will go, and then that'll have to sit there for a few months, compacting the the ground. And there's also going to be a lot of road construction work too, because the Department of Transportation is requiring some significant upgrades to the road network around the site, and that will also be paid for by the developer."
He says approval and opening of the Costco will be a big boost for the town's tax revenue, but didn't want to set a timeline, based on the construction schedule that has changed frequently in Amherst.
A Tops store is open at the Seneca Mall site, under The Shops at West Seneca banner. A K-Mart was next door until closure more than 20 years ago.
