Delta variant not affecting travel yet

Airlines not giving free cancellations any longer

Buffalo Airport

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) The delta variant has contributed to more cases of COVID. but what has that meant to travel plans? Some say not much, but others say be prepared for changes.

Chuck Teal of Teal Travel says no one has thought about cancelling or switching dates. "There's been talk, but no one has moved as far as cancelling," says Teal. Teal says he's not aware if airlines are continuing free cancellations. "Most have followed Southwest's model where you can change without penalties, 0nly if there's a fare increase," explains Teal.

Teal says wearing masks will remain a thing while on public transportation even after the delta variant. He says Disney is requiring masks in indoor settings, but he hasn't seen any other policies yet. "Bring a mask with you, because you don't know the situation in each city going forward," advises Teal, especially to those attending Bills road games.

Renee Pilley of AAA of Western and Central New York says the most common question is preparing for a trip. "What restrictions and what is required to fly to their destination and to return," says Pilley. "If your destination requires any kind of uploaded app, a COVID test is big because it has to be timed, 72 hours prior to your arrival at your destination in most cases." If you don't have a phone that downloads apps, there is another option. "In some cases, they do have printouts you can do. A lot of people have flip phones, and they understand that so you have either the app or the printout you must bring with you," explains Pilley.

Pilley says one such example of a change in policy is a cruise line going through the Snake River. "I just got word Washington State is requiring a COVID test prior to sailing, regardless of whether they've been vaccinated," says Pilley. She adds she's also advised a family at Disney about the mask mandate changes there.

Getting to the airport is another issue. "A lot of people are unprepared, they don't have their information handy. A lot of people told me here at Buffalo's airport, two hours (Before your flight) is barely enough time," notes Pilley.

Pilley adds check your flight time is still on schedule, even the morning of the flight, to make sure you're at the airport in plenty of time.
