Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - After years of planning, construction on the long-discussed pedestrian bridge connecting South Park Avenue’s across-the-street neighbors - the DL&W Terminal and KeyBank Center - will begin this fall.

Construction manager Mark Cerrone Inc. and the NFTA confirmed that all necessary paperwork and permits are in place, clearing the way for work to start.

The bridge, which will span South Park Avenue, will connect the terminal’s second floor to the 100 level of the arena.

Construction is expected to be completed by next August, according to Darren Kempner of the NFTA.

The bridge is viewed as a key economic driver not only for the NFTA, but also for developer Sam Savarino’s restaurant and entertainment-themed proposal for the terminal’s second floor.

In total, $87 million is being invested to restore and revitalize the historic DL&W Terminal, with the bridge project accounting for $8 million of that investment.
