The hospital declared bankruptcy in 2019 and has struggled with finances as it handles a high rate of uninsured, Medicare and Medicaid cases at the facility.

"Eastern Niagara intends to continue providing health care services at both locations until June 17," hospital officials said in a statement. Operators of the hospital on East Avenue in Lockport also operate the Ambulatory Center on South Transit Road which will also close June 17 but reopen immediately under Catholic Health Management.

The ENH closure will leave Lockport residents and those in the eastern portion of Niagara County without a hospital until a new facility being constructed by Catholic Health is completed in the fall.

"We are excited construction is progressing on our new Lockport Memorial Hospital, which is expected to open this fall," Catholic Health said in a statement released Friday after word of the June 17 ENH closing was released. "We have held several hiring events for staff at ENH and nearly 120 have already accepted positions within our health system, including the new Lockport Memorial l Hospital. With today’s announcement, we expect many more will join our healthcare team.”
