Extreme heat watch up for WNY

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) The heat will truly be on this week. Heat advisories and extreme heat watches are up for the region this week.

HEADLINE: Extreme Heat Watch issued June 29 at 1:14PM EDT until July 3 at 8:00PM EDT by NWS Buffalo NY

DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...For the Heat Advisory, heat index values as high as 100
expected. For the Extreme Heat Watch, dangerously hot conditions
with heat index values as high as 110 possible.

* WHERE...Niagara, Orleans, Monroe, Wayne, Northern Cayuga, Oswego,
Northern Erie, Genesee, Livingston, and Ontario Counties.

* WHEN...For the Heat Advisory, from noon to 8 PM EDT Tuesday. For
the Extreme Heat Watch, from Wednesday afternoon through Friday
evening.

* IMPACTS...Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase
the potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those
working or participating in outdoor activities. Hot temperatures
and high humidity may cause heat related illnesses to occur.

INSTRUCTIONS: Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and
pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any
circumstances. This is especially true during hot weather when car
interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When
possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or
evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat
stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency! Call 9 1 1.
