'Food Desert' realities eye-opening to many

Volunteers assist in food delivery on Buffalo's east side

Buffalo, NY (WBEN) - The outpouring of support on the City's East Side is shining a light on the need in parts of Buffalo and Western New York.

"We have been hearing a lot about that term 'food desert' or some people might call it 'food apartheid,' and really what that points to is that lack of access and lack of options to receive nutritious food," said Catherine Shick of FeedMore WNY.

Though the term 'food desert' has become a buzzword of sorts, it is still tough for most people to see why other supermarkets many consider to be nearby are not a viable option for some.

"You can just hop in a car and be at another supermarket location, but many people in our community do not have that option. They're relying on public transportation or they're walking," Shick said. "When you have a situation like what we're facing with that Tops on Jefferson Avenue being the only resource for so many to have that nutritious food access that means a lot of people are without options."

Shick said because of that, there was already a need on the east side of Buffalo. Closing the Tops on Jefferson Avenue simply amplified that.

Organizations like FeedMore WNY, are welcoming the donations of food, time, and money they are receiving for people looking for some way to show support to that area of the community. See below for more on ways to help out.
