DUNKIRK, N.Y. (WBEN) On a day when we're preparing for a Winter storm, groundhogs in the Northeast have made their predictions.
Punxatawney Phil the first to see his shadow at Gobbler's Knob in Pennsylvania.
Dunkirk Dave was in agreement. According to ChautauquaToday.com, Dunkirk Dave issued his forecast regarding the arrival of spring Wednesday morning. While he did not do it in public because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dave's handler Bob Will says the weather prophet ventured outside his warm, comfy home and had some oat meal and made his forecast, six more weeks of winter weather.
According to Will, Dunkirk Dave's accuracy is nearly 90 percent.
Some say if not for the movie 'Groundhog Day', the observance of Groundhog Day would be the stupidest thing ever.
Others agree, it's silly, but it is also one of the most wholesome things America does. It represents a moment for us to share something that isn't controversial. Stupid? yes. Do we need it? Unfortunately yes.
The day's festivities were a little more somber in New Jersey. Milltown Mel, one of Jersey's weather-predicting groundhogs, died just before the big annual ceremony.
"We Wranglers are sad to report that Milltown Mel recently crossed over the rainbow bridge," his handlers, known as the Milltown Wranglers, said in a Facebook post.
Wednesday's event was canceled in Milltown, New Jersey.
