Milltown's popular Groundhog Day festivities are canceled this year, following the death of the local celebrity, who for the last several years has been given the task of predicting whether there will be an early spring or six more weeks of winter gathered at 7 a.m. Sunday at American Legion Post 25. NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — A New Jersey groundhog, famous for his weather-prediction folklore, has died just days before Groundhog Day.

"We wranglers are sad to report that Milltown Mel recently crossed over the rainbow bridge," a Sunday post on his Facebook page said.

His death, while "not such a shock" given the average lifespan of a groundhog is three years, has resulted in the cancellation of Wednesday's ceremony.

"No babies will be available to replace him until this spring. We tried everywhere to get a stand-in, but to no avail."

"We will work hard on getting us a new weather prognosticator for next year, till then please check out what all of Mel’s cousins have to say on Feb 2nd," their post continued.

Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil and New York City's Staten Island Chuck will continue with their traditions to determine whether there will be an early spring or six more weeks of winter.
