BUFFALO, N.Y. (WBEN) - The state is not ready to commit to Buffalo Bills games operating at 100% capacity this September.
In a visit to Buffalo on Wednesday, Governor Cuomo said Highmark Stadium would operate at 50/50 capacity with half of the stadium being available for vaccinated fans and the other half for those without a vaccine. Those without a vaccine would be required to be separated by at least six feet while those who have received a vaccine can be close together. It's the same rule as Blue Jays games in Buffalo this summer.
However, the governor suggested the rule will change by September.
"September is a long way away," Cuomo said. "Today, that is the formula. I hope it is better by September...Am I going to set a goal of saying 'September we'll be at 100%?' No. Because nobody knows. And anybody who heard me say in September it's going to be 100% would say 'That's just a typical politician. He has no idea what he's talking about but he's talking'."
The Buffalo Bills will open their season on September 12 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The team is selling tickets beginning Wednesday night with no restrictions on capacity. However, they said they will refund tickets if capacity is reduced.
