Silver Creek, N.Y. (WBEN) - A crash involving two tractor trailers on the New York State Thruway near the Silver Creek exit late Wednesday night has left one person dead, according to New York State Police.

The incident took place at approximately 10:45 p.m. EST when State Police responded to a serious personal injury crash on I-90 Eastbound at the Silver Creek exit.

Upon a preliminary investigation, it was determined a tractor trailer traveling Eastbound, near mile marker 455.54, drifted from the right lane and struck a tractor trailer that was stopped on the South shoulder to switch drivers.

The tractor trailer then jack-knifed and overturned multiple times before becoming engulfed in flames on the South shoulder. The driver of the overturned tractor trailer was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The two occupants of the stopped tractor trailer were not injured.

The accident ended up shutting down the I-90 Eastbound at Exit 58 for several hours after the accident. Traffic heading towards that stretch of the roadway was able to get off at Exit 58 and immediately return to the Thruway beyond the site of the incident.

State Police say they continue to investigate the accident.
