Amherst, N.Y. (WBEN) - Not for decades has the northwest section of the Town of Amherst and the Sweet Home School District been home to a community center for students, families and seniors.
Until now.
Surrounded by Sweet Home students in an expansive space in the Northpointe development off Sweet Home Road, Town Supervisor Brian Kulpa presided over a ribbon-cutting at the 29,000 square foot facility leased by Zaepfel Development.
"We're here today to announce the official start of construction on our Northwest Amherst Community Center," Kulpa said. "This is a joint project between the Town of Amherst and Sweet Home Central Schools."
The new center will host community services, youth and adult recreational facilities, child care and after-school programming, support services and have a gym and fitness center. The center is tentatively slated to offer partial services in the fall of 2022 with full operations opening in September 2023.
Two open houses will be held to offer tours of the facilities and provide information on how to get involved in planning the Center's programming. All are welcome to attend the open houses on both May 14 and May 16.
Following the Open Houses, community surveys and task forces will provide input on the needs of the community and how the center can help meet those needs.
