Grand Island, N.Y. (WBEN) - After a weekend fire, Grand Island Central Schools will help a number of families affected by the blaze by allowing them to attend Universal Pre-K at Sidway Elementary.
Superintendent Dr. Brian Graham says he started thinking immediately about the universal pre kindergarten students who are provided their education through a community provider such as Kinderkidzz. Graham says Sidway Elementary hosts two full classrooms all day long.
Graham says a text thread among district staffers started shortly after the fire.
"All of those individuals worked together to start exploring plans to bring the children from Kinderkidzz to one of our school campuses as soon as possible. Those meetings included our principal at Kaegebein and our principal at Heath Road Elementary. So all day Saturday, all of these individuals were working diligently to start to begin to conceptualize a plan," said Graham with WBEN on Wednesday.
Graham says 31 universal pre-K students will be welcomed into Sidway Elementary starting Thursday. He says a few other students were in the Kinderkidzz classroom, and he's seeking permission from parents and the state to bring them aboard.
Saturday's fire caused $2 million in damage.
