Buffalo, NY (WBEN) Come next season, the Sabres will have something new on their jersey: a sponsor, as Stark Tech will become the first company to get its logo next to the Sabres logo.
Former Sabre Don Luce recalls playing in an era where "the boards were white." He says that's definitely changed in the NHL, but he doesn't think players will be thinking about that. "I don't want to speak for the players today, but I think that if I was playing today and they had that on the on the Jersey, I don't think that really matters," says Luce. "I think the players are playing for the logo on the front, and they're playing for the City of Buffalo, and they're representing the people here and and the team itself."
Seymour Knox IV, son of Sabres co-founder Seymour Knox III, says it's a great opportunity for whatever company is on the players jersey. " I'm going to be interested is see what Stark Tech is, because there used to be a Motorola cell phone called the Stark Tech. Was like a clam shaped phone back in the day, and you could fold and put your put it in your pocket," Knox notes.
Both note this could be start of a trend happening across the pond. "If you ever watch a game in Europe, oh, it's insane,: says Luce. "In Europe, their jerseys are totally sponsored. I don't even know have room for the number anymore." Knox sees the same thing. "If you look at any of those in Sweden or Finland, you can't even see the team's logo. They're just, wearing sponsorships everywhere."
