Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - It's a once in a lifetime honor to be selected Grand Marshal of Buffalo's St. Patrick's Day Parade.

It has become a family tradition for the Knott family of South Buffalo.

Liam Knott has the honor of leading the parade down Delaware Avenue come Sunday in Downtown Buffalo.

"I remember coming to the parade as a little kid and watching my mom run around like a maniac," he told WBEN on Friday.

Knott is the fourth member of his family to lead the annual parade as grand marshal.

"My grandfather served as Grand Marshal in 1962. My mom in 1981 and my uncle in 2001," he said.

Liam has been working the parade in some capacity since his teens. In all of the years, he said it hasn't changed much.

"We've tried to stick to the tradition of honoring our Irish American heritage and putting on a great family event for the city of Buffalo."

In addition to leading the parade, Knott gets to select his Deputy Marshals. He has asked his mother, father, brother Mike and sister Brigid to march with him along Delaware Avenue.

The parade starts Sunday at 2 p.m. ET at Niagara Square in front of Buffalo City Hall and proceeds to North Street. It's 1.3 miles in length. The parade draws tens of thousands of people each year.

According to the personal-finance site Wallethub, Buffalo is ranked eighth-best city in 2024 for St. Patrick's Day celebrations, among 200 U.S. cities.
