Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - As the Russian incursion into Ukraine continued its deadly escalation Sunday, dozens of local Ukrainian Americans and those who support them were rallying in Niagara Square and condemning the actions of Vladimir Putin and Russia.
"He's the number one terrorist in the world right now," said Taras Hurmak in a passionate commentary to reporters in Niagara Square as he held his home country's blue and yellow flag proudly. "We have to take him out."
Chants of "freedom, freedom," could be heard as the noisy crowd gathered on the outskirts of the square and circled it a few times in a symbolic march.
Myron Deputat was waving a flag in the square and said he was there to support the people of Ukraine. "I have friends and family in Ukraine," he said.
"If Ukraine falls, there will be someone else," Deputat said to WBEN. "In the end we may find ourselves in a world catastrophe, the likes of which we've never seen."
The local Ukrainian community held an emergency meeting Saturday and began the process of formulating an action plan to respond and help the people of Ukraine.
