
Grand Island, N.Y. (WBEN) - Erie County Sheriff's deputies are investigating the death of a man after he fell off his sailboat into the Niagara River early Saturday.
First responders were called to the Sandy Beach Yacht Club on Grand Island around 12:20 a.m. A 9-1-1 caller reported the man had fallen from the back of his docked boat and appeared to be drowning.
Rescuers recovered the man’s body about an hour later, more than 100 yards from where he fell into the water.
The victim has been identified as Edward Lachapelle, 61, of Turner, Maine, according to deputies.
