Marathon weekend in Buffalo

Buffalo Marathon, 2025

Susan Rose, WBEN

The Buffalo Marathon celebrates 25 years this weekend.

"Back in 2001, we had 400 racers. This weekend, we have 7500," said Kim Fenter, Buffalo Marathon Co-Race Director.

Forty nine states and 14 countries are represented this year.

Why is it such a big draw?

"There are a couple of reasons, The course is flatter. It has a small grade to it. It's also a Boston Marathon qualifier. That brings in a lot of runners who are trying to qualify. And, our community welcomes this. Everyone comments on how wonderful it is from the volunteers to the cheering."

About 1500 volunteers help with the Marathon. "They are the heart of the event," added Fenter.

The full and half marathon starts at 6:30am Sunday.

Showers are expected for the start of the race.

"Running in the rain is not a horrible thing for runners," said Fenter. "It keeps them cool so we don't worry too much about it. Rain or shine, the race goes on."
