Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - In about a month, the United States will celebrate its 250th birthday, and many municipalities across the nation will celebrate the Fourth of July with a bang.

While no formal plans have been announced for the City of Buffalo just yet, Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan does say the city is planning to bring fireworks back to Downtown Buffalo.

"Usually these big celebrations are led by the federal government, but the federal government is in a bit of disarray right now," said Mayor Ryan when asked of the city's America 250 celebration plans on Tuesday. "When it was the 200th anniversary, the federal government made funding available to the states and to the municipalities to hold celebrations across America. This year, for the 250, it's a bit disjointed, so locals are doing what they can. And what we're going to do is going to have a fireworks celebration in Downtown Buffalo for the first time in a generation."

Ryan says celebrating Buffalo's involvement in America's history is very important, but adds there will be more to come in a few years.

"Buffalo has been here for a long time, but we're also approaching our anniversary. So in six years, we'll be having our own anniversary, and you'll be hearing more about that as we work towards that goal," Ryan teased.

An announcement for the city's Fourth of July celebration is anticipated in the coming days.
