Nowakowski wants answers about Saturday's violence on Chippewa Street

Mitch Nowakowski

Buffalo, N.Y. - Fillmore District Councilman Mitch Nowakowski speaks with the assembled media on Tuesday, Dec. 12, 2023 about his letter to the State Comptroller's Office regarding an urgent request for a risk assessment audit looking into City of Buffalo employees on paid leave administration.

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Key Buffalo leaders - including top brass from Mayor Sean Ryan's Office and the Buffalo Police Department - are continuing to investigate what led to deputy police commissioner Craig Macy allegedly pushing a female pedestrian to the ground along Chippewa late Saturday night.

The incident was caught on amateur video, which was later posted on social media outlets.

In a release issued late Monday afternoon, BUuffalo police commissioner Erika Shields called the video "concerning."

Police officials confirmed to WBEN that an investigation is underway, but declined to say what the highly regarded and respected Macy's status was within the department. Macy served as interim police commissioner from January until Shields was hired in May.

Fillmore District Councilman Mitch Nowakowski says until more information is compiled, there should be no rush to judgment.

"When everything is done, I'll form an opinion," Nowakowski said with WBEN.

The councilman did lay, at least, part of the blame at the influx of "those under 21" who come to Chippewa Street to "loiter and pick up fights."

Saturday was a particularly busy and brutal night on Chippewa.

Earlier in the evening, there was a peaceful street dance party that ended at around 10 p.m., and Chippewa also had a spillover, positive impact from the Taste of Buffalo.

"We need to take everything moment by moment," Nowakowski said.
