Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Nearly three weeks to the minute after a racially-motivated attack at the Jefferson Avenue Tops Market in Buffalo occurred, the president of the National Urban League was standing in front of the store to declare, "We will not forget Buffalo."
Marc Morial stood with leaders of the Buffalo Black community and political leaders on Jefferson Avenue, pledging that the attack in Buffalo that claimed ten lives will not be forgotten and will be the backbone behind a national call for action to end systemic racism and curb gun violence.
Morial spoke of "A wall of inaction that has plagued the halls of Congress," and told those gathered that the power of the urban league in 92 cities nationwide will be behind a three-pronged effort for change.
The urban league is advocating for a White House summit on hate, domestic terrorism and white supremacy, a national ban on assault weapons and to address systemic racism and redlining.
"Buffalo, you can be a role model," said Morial before a supportive crowd gathered Saturday afternoon.
Morial said the deadly mass shooting in Buffalo is part of a national epidemic and referenced the 45,000 deaths due to gun violence in the country last year along with a rising number of hate crimes.
Following the public event Saturday, Morial gathered with the local Buffalo Urban League chapter as community leaders to discuss 'a way forward'.
Rep. Brian Higgins of Buffalo spoke at the event and referenced next week's expected debate ad vote on gun control and background check measures.
"Thoughts and prayers are appreciated, but action is essential."
