Naval Park to mark Memorial Day with several events

Repairs will start this year on the USS Croaker.

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - This memorial day, there are many ways to remember lives lost in service to our country right here in Western New York. Some of those events will be happening along the waterfront at the Naval and Military Park.

"If you come by tomorrow, Sunday, or Monday, you're going to see over 7,300 flags planted across our memorial gardens," said Brian Luallen, CEO of the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park. "That's a significant but sobering display. It represents the 7,300 veterans who lose their battle every year to PTSD."

The battle with PTSD is something the park is hoping to bring attention to this Memorial Day.

The Park also will be remembering the Sullivan brothers, who died together aboard USS Juneau CL-52 in November 1942, inspired the movie Saving Private Ryan, and whose namesake ship is one of the highlights of the Naval Park.

On Sunday there will be a screening of the 1944 film, The Fighting Sullivans. That event is free but a ticket is required. You can get tickets here.

On Memorial Day, a 10:00 AM service will be followed by ceremonies throughout the day at memorials around the park. You can see a full schedule of events here.
