Niagara Falls, NY (WBEN) Spirit Airlines will be ending its time at the Niagara Falls Airport on Tuesday.
"I think this is a good example of how the pandemic has really impacted the travel industry overall," says Elizabeth Carey of AAA of WCNY. "The closure at the border as impacted travel as well." Carey says Canadians can't cross the border to come into the US to fly, and Spirit was popular with Canadians. "They would take advantage of the low fares. Also local travelers liked it, as it was a low cost carrier and a cheap way to get to Myrtle Beach and in Florida," adds Carey.
Carey says travel options are limited. "International travel opportunity is limited because of border closures. Some of the islands are welcoming Americans right now," notes Carey. There is some travel to across the US. "Some people are flying to different places across the country. We saw bookings to Orlando a lot, and we're also seeing people booking into 2021, with something to look forward to in the event travel can return," says Carey. She says others have been hesitant because of the governor's travel advisory requiring a two week quarantine upon return.
Spirit was different among other airlines because it was strictly a web based airline for booking flights.
